The Long View Redemption - by our own Blue Maas!

DEATH THREAT received by mothers' and children's advocacy, http://www.stopfamilyviolence.org of New York City Wednesday, 12 April 2006:

"The depraved threats our organizations have received are the same kind of threats abused women and their children endure," said Irene Weiser, executive director of StopFamilyViolence.org.

A common theme on the websites of fathers' rights groups appears to be the pursuit of "power over" through the use of religion, violence, or degradation, rather than a spirit of cooperation or willingness to work together to achieve the best environment for the family and therefore the child.

Examples include:

The fathers for America foundation -http://www.geocities.com/fathers_for_america/classic_tan2.html

"Our program focuces a great deal of study into the importance of the father/child relation and why the father is called to be positioned as the head of the home." (emphasis added)

Alliance for Non-Custodial Parents' Rights

"This is absurd. It describes the typical female mind of making a mole hill out of a speck of sand."

"Our nation was founded through violent conflict. The civil rights of minorities in
this country were largely a result of bloody riots in the mid-sixties that cost
many people their lives. A lot of credit is given to the peaceful efforts of
MLK; but we all know what that got him. Those bloody riots are what changed
things in America."

"My point being that change in these two social issues contained both threats and
violence. Why would anyone expect that this important issue would be any
different. I would hope that our lawmakers would understand this point of
history and give any threat or violence the proper level of attention."

Father's Rights ... and Wrongs, By Kim Gandy, President : National NOW Times // Summer 2006

The good news as Father's Day approaches is that more and more men are sharingduties on the home front. The bad news is that groups claiming to representfathers are really out to restrict women's options. With the recent addition of two right-wing conservatives to the Supreme Courtand an anti-abortion rights battle spreading from state to state, I wasencouraged to hear this spring that the National Center for Men planned to jointhe fight for reproductive rights. It's always good to have friends in battle, right? Until I heard the rest of the story: It's their own "rights" they're concernedabout.

Who Cooked the Last Supper?
THE WOMEN'S HISTORY OF THE WORLD
by Rosalind Miles, PhD

But the male peasant, however cruelly oppressed, always had the right to beat his wife. The black slave had to labor for the white master by day, but he did not have to service him by night as well. This grim pattern continues to this day, with women bearing an extra ration of pain and misery whatever the circumstances. While men fought and died, wholesale and systematic rape -- often accompanied by the same torture and death that the men suffered -- is a fate only women endure.

Women's history springs from moments of recognition such as this, and the awareness of the difference is still very ... new.

ONLY in our time have historians begun to look at the historical experience of men and women separately, and to acknowledge that for most of our human past, women's interests have been opposed to those of men.

Women's interests have been opposed BY them, too: "Men have not willingly extended to women the rights and freedoms they have claimed for themselves."
